In a strategic move, Madhya Pradesh fast bowler Avesh Khan has been drafted into India’s Test squad for the upcoming match against South Africa in Cape Town, commencing on January 3. This decision comes after the absence of seasoned pacer Mohammed Shami, who was initially named in the squad pending a fitness clearance that wasn’t obtained from the BCCI medical team, resulting in his exclusion from the series.
Avesh Khan, who marked his ODI and T20I debuts last year, showcased his prowess in the recent ODI series in South Africa, claiming six wickets in three matches. With an impressive record in first-class cricket, amassing 149 wickets in 38 matches, including seven five-wicket hauls, Avesh brings a valuable bowling option to the Indian lineup.
The India squad for the second Test includes captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Prasidh Krishna, KS Bharat (wk), Abhimanyu Easwaran, and the newly added Avesh Khan. This alteration aims to bolster India’s bowling unit as they seek redemption in the upcoming Test match following their loss in the opening encounter.
