India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is steadily progressing in his recovery journey after a life-threatening car accident in December 2022. Engaging in match-simulation exercises, Pant eyes a return to competitive cricket during IPL 2024. On Tuesday, he, along with Hardik Pandya, engaged in a 20-over practice game at the KSCA facility in Alur, Karnataka, marking a crucial step in his rehabilitation.
While Pant batted without any discomfort during the entire 20 overs, he refrained from keeping wickets, intending to resume that aspect of his training in March. The National Cricket Academy (NCA) physios and trainers are meticulously overseeing Pant’s conditioning, aiming to reintegrate him into high-intensity training without overburdening him. The exercises are expected to continue until early March, ensuring a gradual and cautious approach to his comeback.
Delhi Capitals’ head coach, Ricky Ponting, has previously emphasized the need to manage Pant’s workload through IPL 2024, expressing optimism about the player’s availability. Ponting highlighted the importance of balancing Pant’s participation to maximize his impact without risking his recovery.
Pant, who hasn’t played competitive cricket since the accident, underwent knee surgery in Mumbai after being airlifted from Dehradun. The NCA in Bengaluru has been pivotal in his rehabilitation, guided by experienced physio S Rajnikanth and supported by Thulasi Ram Yuvaraj.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah had earlier confirmed Hardik Pandya’s vice-captaincy for the 2024 T20 World Cup, reinforcing his recovery from an ankle injury. Pandya, also part of the match-simulation game, is reportedly on track to lead Mumbai Indians in IPL 2024. The fitness monitoring at NCA is contributing to his gradual return to peak physical condition.
With the IPL season approaching, Pant’s progress brings hope to fans and teammates alike, anticipating his impactful return to the cricketing arena. The Delhi Capitals, along with Pant, are gearing up for an exciting campaign, with the dynamic batter expected to play a key role in their quest for glory.
