However, Pant faced repercussions as he was fined heavily for his team’s Code of Conduct violation during their IPL 2024 encounter against Chennai Super Kings at the Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
This match marked the defending champions’ first loss of the season under new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, after securing consecutive victories at home. Meanwhile, Pant’s leadership steered Delhi Capitals to their maiden triumph in 2024, breaking their streak of losses away from home.
Rishabh Pant faced a fine as his team struggled to maintain the required over rate during their match against CSK. Since it was the team’s first violation of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct regarding minimum over rate regulations, Pant was fined ₹12 lakhs.
This is now the second occasion where a team captain has been penalized for their team’s slow over rate in the IPL. Shubman Gill, leading the Gujarat Titans, also bore the brunt of a fine amounting to INR 12 lakh for the same violation during their IPL 2024 clash against the Chennai Super Kings at the Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai just last Tuesday.
As the top-order of Chennai struggled, Ajinkya Rahane stepped up in the middle order with a brisk 45 off 30 balls. Following him, MS Dhoni, the legendary figure of Indian cricket, showcased his vintage style with an unbeaten 37 off just 16 deliveries, including four boundaries and three sixes. Despite their efforts, the Delhi Capitals’ bowlers staged an impressive comeback in the final overs, limiting CSK to 171 for six. This allowed the hosts to secure victory by a margin of 20 runs.
This victory marked Delhi’s first triumph of the season following defeats against Punjab Kings in their opening match and Rajasthan Royals. Meanwhile, Chennai faced their first setback after a strong start at Chepauk, where they emerged victorious in their first two encounters against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans.
