Rashid Khan, the renowned Afghan cricketer currently shining in IPL 2024 with Gujarat Titans, has expressed his disappointment regarding Cricket Australia’s decision to indefinitely postpone the scheduled three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. This development has prompted Rashid to reconsider his participation in the upcoming 2025 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL).
The T20I series, a crucial part of the ICC’s future tours programme, was slated for August at a neutral venue. However, Cricket Australia announced in January that it would be postponing the series after consultations with the Australian government due to concerns about human rights issues in Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.
In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Rashid Khan revealed his disappointment, emphasizing the importance of playing against top-ranked teams like Australia for the growth and development of Afghanistan’s cricketing prowess. Rashid highlighted the significant impact of playing against formidable opponents, citing Afghanistan’s recent T20 series against India as a valuable learning experience.
However, this isn’t the first time Cricket Australia has deferred bilateral engagements with Afghanistan. Rashid lamented the impact of such decisions on Afghan cricket, questioning why cricket is dragged into political issues beyond its control.
Despite the setbacks, Rashid emphasized that cricket serves as a vital source of happiness for the people of Afghanistan. He urged Cricket Australia to understand the profound significance of the sport in his homeland and its potential to bring joy to the Afghan populace.
Regarding his participation in the BBL, Rashid Khan underscored the primacy of representing his country over personal considerations. He raised valid concerns about the inconsistency of wanting Afghan players in the BBL while sidelining bilateral engagements with Afghanistan. Rashid stressed that the only viable solution to the current impasse is for Cricket Australia to engage with Afghanistan in reciprocal cricketing fixtures.
