In a high-octane encounter between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens on Sunday, the new Hawk-Eye technology took center stage in determining Virat Kohli’s dismissal, sparking controversy and debate among fans and players alike.
During RCB’s chase of 223, Kohli, the talismanic captain, fell for 18 off 7 balls, caught and bowled off a high full toss from Harshit Rana in the third over. Despite playing the ball well outside his crease, Kohli found himself walking back to the pavilion, visibly displeased with the decision.
The TV umpire, Michael Gough, intervened to review the legality of the delivery, employing the new Hawk-Eye ball tracking technology to assess its height. According to the system, the ball would have passed Kohli at 0.92 meters from the ground if he had been upright at the crease, just below his waist height measured at 1.04 meters.
However, Kohli and his teammate Faf du Plessis, the non-striker, contested the decision, arguing that the ball appeared higher than Kohli’s waist. Despite their protests, the decision stood, leaving RCB’s camp frustrated.
Introduced this season in the IPL to eliminate subjectivity, the technology measures the height of the ball as it passes the batter at the popping crease and compares it against the recorded waist height of the batter in an upright position. If the ball exceeds the recorded height, it’s deemed a no-ball; otherwise, it’s a fair delivery.
Reflecting on the incident, du Plessis acknowledged the importance of adhering to the rules but expressed sympathy for Kohli’s disappointment. “In those situations, you’ll always have one team that’s happy and one team that doesn’t feel like it’s quite the right decision. But that’s just how the game works,” he remarked.
As debates over technology’s role in decision-making continue, the incident adds another layer of intrigue to an already thrilling IPL season, leaving fans eagerly anticipating more action-packed encounters and contentious moments on the cricketing field.
