Mauricio Pochettino didn’t mince his words after Chelsea humbling 5-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. The Blues, who went into half-time trailing by just one goal, capitulated in the second half, conceding four goals in a devastating 18-minute onslaught by the Gunners.
Pochettino made three changes to his defense for the game, opting to rest key players Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva, while Malo Gusto sustained an injury during Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final loss to Manchester City.
“It’s not difficult to explain,” said Pochettino. “Everyone saw we didn’t compete from the beginning of the game. After we conceded, the team was so soft. I’m so disappointed with the start because we’re supposed to have full energy and compete better.”
Chelsea’s lackluster performance was evident, with Pochettino expressing disappointment at their failure to be aggressive and concentrate on finding solutions to the challenges posed by Arsenal. The defeat comes as a significant setback for Chelsea, who were on an eight-game unbeaten run in the Premier League and harbored hopes of qualifying for Europe next season.
“We were talking at half-time to start in a different way,” added Pochettino. “But we did not. When we conceded the third goal, the team gave up. It was tough on them.”
Despite competing well against Manchester City just days earlier, Pochettino lamented Chelsea’s inability to replicate that performance against Arsenal, suggesting that fatigue may have been a factor.
“It’s not fair to talk about the players we are missing,” he remarked. “From the start of the season, we have been missing so many players every single week. The team showed a lack of capacity to resist – that is what is the problem.”
The defeat leaves Chelsea in ninth place in the Premier League table, with Pochettino and his team facing a challenging road ahead as they seek to bounce back from this demoralizing defeat.
