Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed the club’s intention to keep their captain, Bruno Fernandes, after the Portuguese midfielder expressed his desire to stay at Old Trafford.
Despite United’s willingness to entertain offers for many of their first-team players in a bid to raise funds for squad rebuilding, Fernandes remains a crucial exception. Alongside youngsters Alejandro Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, and Rasmus Hojlund, Fernandes is seen as integral to the club’s future.
Recently, Bruno Fernandes has been linked with high-profile moves to Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. However, United are likely to demand a substantial offer to consider parting with their talisman. In a post-match interview with Sky Sports, following his stellar performance in United’s 3-2 Premier League win over Newcastle, Fernandes reiterated his commitment to the club.
“I will be here if the club wants me to be a part of the future,” Fernandes stated. “If for some reason they don’t want me, I will go.”
Fernandes, who signed an extension in 2022, still has two years remaining on his contract, with an option to extend for an additional season.
When asked about his captain’s comments, Ten Hag responded, “Absolutely, the club wants to keep Bruno.” Addressing the speculation about Fernandes’ future, the Dutchman added, “I have to see the interview, but everything I know from him, he loves Manchester United, the fans, and playing for Manchester United.”
Fernandes has been a standout performer for United this season, scoring 10 Premier League goals and notching his eighth assist of the campaign by setting up Hojlund for the third goal against Newcastle. Ten Hag praised Fernandes’ dedication and resilience, especially given the injuries that have plagued the squad.
“He always gives his best and is an example to everyone, even with his injuries,” Ten Hag said. “He loves football and he wants to win. That is how I would describe his character. It is not easy when so many players around him are injured and he has to carry the team. But he keeps to a good level and, especially in the spring, he grows to a brilliant level.”
Fernandes’ commitment and leadership have made him an indispensable part of Manchester United. As the club navigates a crucial period of rebuilding, both Ten Hag and Fernandes seem aligned in their vision for the future, promising a hopeful horizon for the Red Devils and their fans.
