The Indian cricket team had their first comprehensive practice session in New York on Wednesday afternoon at Cantiague Park in Nassau County. This marked the beginning of their formal preparations since arriving in the city on May 26. Prior to this, the team had a brief running and conditioning session on Tuesday evening. Notably absent from Wednesday’s session was star player Virat Kohli, who is expected to join the squad later.
Cantiague Park, the official training facility designated by the International Cricket Council (ICC), boasts six drop-in practice pitches. The Indian team utilized three of these pitches during their session, with two reserved for the batters and one for the bowlers.
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill led the batting practice, followed by Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja. New arrivals Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sanju Samson, Rinku Singh, and Yuzvendra Chahal were advised to take it easy after their long flight but were present at the park. They are expected to participate fully in the next net session scheduled for Friday.
Despite some rain in the neighboring areas of New York, the weather at Cantiague Park was ideal for cricket, with pleasant conditions and a daytime temperature around 18 degrees Celsius. The session proceeded smoothly under these favorable conditions.
The Indian team is staying in Long Island to avoid the long travel times and traffic congestion of Manhattan, ensuring they can focus fully on their preparations.
Cantiague Park is located over five miles from Nassau County Stadium, where the team will play three games in the Twenty20 World Cup, as well as a warm-up game against Bangladesh on June 1. This practice session is crucial as it marks the start of their rigorous training regimen ahead of the tournament.
The anticipation is building as India gears up for the World Cup, with fans eagerly awaiting the arrival of Virat Kohli and hoping for strong performances from their cricketing heroes. The team’s time in New York is seen as a vital period for fine-tuning strategies and building team cohesion.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Indian team continues their preparations for the T20 World Cup.
