Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has expressed his desire to coach the Indian cricket team, marking a significant development following Rahul Dravid’s tenure. Fresh from his success as a mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their triumphant IPL 2024 campaign, Gambhir has reportedly been contacted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the head coach position, though it’s unclear if he has formally applied.
Speaking at an event in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, Gambhir shared his enthusiasm for the role. “Look, I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour. You are representing 140 crore Indians, and more across the globe as well. When you represent India, how can it get bigger than that?” he said, responding to a question from a young attendee.
Gambhir’s statement came in response to a youngster asking how he would help India win a World Cup. “It’s not me that will help India win the World Cup, it is 140 crore Indians that will help India win the World Cup,” Gambhir emphasized. “If everyone starts praying for us, and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless and yes, I would love to coach India.”
Rahul Dravid, whose tenure as head coach ends following the ongoing T20 World Cup, has decided not to seek another term, according to sources. VVS Laxman, initially expected to succeed Dravid, had made himself unavailable last year due to personal reasons.
BCCI secretary Jay Shah indicated the board’s preference for an Indian coach who understands the cricket structure deeply and has progressed through the ranks. “We are in the process of identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks,” Shah said.
Should Gambhir be appointed, he would have to relinquish his role with KKR due to the BCCI’s conflict of interest rules. Despite his lack of coaching experience at the international or domestic level, Gambhir has proven his capabilities as a mentor in the IPL. He served as a mentor for the Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023, guiding them to the playoffs both seasons, and for KKR in 2024, leading them to the IPL title.
Gambhir’s illustrious international career includes key roles in India’s T20 World Cup win in 2007 and the ODI World Cup win in 2011. As KKR captain from 2011 to 2017, he led the team to two IPL titles, in 2012 and 2014.
With the BCCI set to begin interviewing shortlisted candidates soon, Gambhir’s potential appointment could usher in a new era for Indian cricket, fueled by his passion and strategic acumen.
