Former India bowling coach Paras Mhambrey has shed light on the recent dip in form of star pacer Umran Malik. Known for his ability to consistently bowl at speeds over 145 kmph, Malik has been a standout for his raw pace. However, Mhambrey believes that the young bowler’s struggles with line and length have been detrimental to his performance.
Umran Malik made his IPL debut in 2021, playing three matches and picking up two wickets. His breakthrough came in the 2022 IPL season, where he impressed with 22 wickets in 14 games, showcasing his potential as a fast bowler from Jammu and Kashmir.
“I think one has to build talent. Someone having express pace is a rare commodity and you see potential in him. When he burst onto the scene bowling 145-148 kmph – I’m not someone who gets carried away with the speed gun showing 160 kmph because I don’t think it is real – you realise pace was his strength. He was definitely quick and was hitting the high 140 kmphs regularly. To bowl consistently at that pace is good and he has done that. But how does he do that?” Mhambrey told The Indian Express.
Despite his initial success, Malik’s performance in the following IPL seasons and in international cricket, particularly in the T20I format, has not met expectations. His lack of control has often led to him conceding runs, despite his impressive speed. Malik’s top speed in IPL is 157 kmph, while in international cricket it is 156 kmph, yet his inconsistency has been a major issue.
“In T20s, if you are not having control, you will struggle. Once you do that, you will lose the faith of the captain. So one has to gain control and that will happen only if he plays Ranji Trophy. That is why we are pushing him to play Ranji Trophy because when he goes through a season, even under pressure, he will be able to execute his skillset,” said Mhambrey.
Mhambrey emphasized the importance of playing in the Ranji Trophy to help Malik gain the necessary control and experience under pressure. This, he believes, will enable the young pacer to develop his skillset and improve his consistency, ultimately helping him regain his form and secure his place in the Indian cricket team.
