Aston Villa has made a significant addition to their squad by signing midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton for £50 million. The 22-year-old Belgian, who played every minute of Belgium’s Euro 2024 campaign, is set to bring his talents to Villa Park and compete in the upcoming Champions League season.
Onana’s journey to Villa follows his £33 million move from Lille to Everton in 2022, during which he made 72 appearances and scored four goals for the Toffees. His impressive performances had previously attracted interest from Arsenal in 2023 and other top clubs this summer.
Villa manager Unai Emery had been searching for a new defensive midfielder after selling Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42.35 million in June. Onana expressed his excitement about the move, stating, “I’ll be playing in the Champions League again and that’s very exciting. We also have a manager that’s one of the best in the business and I think he can take my game to the next level.”
Onana also credited his Belgium teammate and fellow Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans for influencing his decision to join the Midlands club. “Youri played a big part in me being here because he told me lots of good stuff about the club,” Onana revealed.
Aston Villa, who finished fourth in the Premier League last season, are preparing for their first Champions League campaign since the 1982-83 season, following their European Cup victory. The addition of Onana brings Villa’s summer spending to around £140 million, with other notable signings including Ian Maatsen from Chelsea for £35 million, Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea from Juventus for £18.6 million, Jaden Philogene’s return from Hull for £18 million, Ross Barkley’s move from Luton for £5 million, and Lewis Dobbin’s transfer from Everton for £9 million.
Villa will kick off their Premier League campaign at West Ham on Saturday, 17 August, with hopes high for a successful season both domestically and in Europe.
