“I’d like him to stay but it depends on other clubs,” said Pep Guardiola. “I don’t know the situation. There have been no contacts in the last days. It’s a question of training, being with us until the transfer window finishes, and we’ll see.”

In contrast, the future of midfielder Kalvin Phillips appears more certain. Phillips, who struggled during a loan spell at West Ham last season, is expected to leave City, likely on another loan, before the transfer window closes on August 30. His disappointing stint at West Ham dashed any hopes of making Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2024.

Guardiola substituted Phillips at half-time against Celtic, citing the need to protect him after he missed the end of last season due to injury. “That’s why we didn’t give him more minutes,” Guardiola explained. “I don’t know what’s going to happen. He knows the situation, and we’ll see.”
