In a thrilling conclusion to their T20 series, Team India secured a 3-0 clean sweep against Sri Lanka, clinching the final match via a Super Over in Pallekele on Tuesday. This series marks the beginning of a new chapter under the leadership of head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav.
Following the series victory, Suryakumar Yadav revealed a key change in team dynamics that started during the T20 World Cup. The team has adopted a practice of sitting together as a whole unit, rather than in smaller groups, regardless of the game’s outcome. This shift aims to enhance team bonding and unity, reflecting positively on the field.
“We don’t sit together as a team for fun only when we win a game or a series. This trend started during the World Cup, where no matter the result or performance in the game, we used to sit together,” Suryakumar shared with Sony Sports Network. “We decided that we wouldn’t sit in groups of two or three people but always sit together as a team. This leads to better bonding between the players and reflects on the ground. It also builds that friendship and ability to stand in support of a fellow member of the team.”
The captain’s comments sparked reactions from former Indian cricketers Ajay Jadeja and Ashish Nehra. Jadeja expressed surprise at the notion that such a practice needed to be formally introduced, suggesting that team unity should occur naturally in any team sport. “That is what you expect in a team sport. I’m just surprised that players are talking about this even today and it has been rather a change in the team that players won’t sit in small groups. I don’t know, did you not all sit together in previous teams? But again, the captain mentioned that he brought this change, although this is old,” Jadeja remarked on Sony Sports.
Nehra echoed Jadeja’s thoughts, questioning why this emphasis on collective team bonding was not implemented earlier. “Didn’t he say that this change happened during the World Cup? That happened only a month back. I’m not doubting him, but I’m rather surprised that this has only started now,” Nehra said.
As Team India celebrates their T20I series triumph, they now turn their focus to the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. The team will aim to continue their winning streak and further solidify the new era of Indian cricket under Gambhir and Yadav’s leadership.
This victory and the emphasis on team unity set a promising tone for India’s future cricket endeavors, with fans eagerly anticipating how these changes will translate into performance on the field.
