The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has expressed optimism about the future of international cricket in Afghanistan, citing Rashid Khan’s active involvement in the ongoing Shpageeza Cricket League (SCL) 2024 as a positive indicator of the country’s improved security and stability. Rashid, a global cricket icon, is currently playing for the Speen Ghar Tigers in the SCL, a tournament that has become a beacon of hope for Afghan cricket fans and the ACB alike.
In a country long troubled by war and political unrest, Afghanistan’s national cricket team has been forced to play its “home” games in neutral venues like India and the UAE. However, Rashid Khan’s return to Afghanistan and participation in domestic cricket is being seen as a sign that the environment in the country is becoming more conducive to hosting international matches.
Rashid, who visited Afghanistan earlier this year ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup after a three-year gap, made headlines on August 20 by smashing the fastest fifty in the SCL T20. He scored a blistering 23-ball 53, including three fours and six sixes, although his efforts weren’t enough to secure a win for the Speen Ghar Tigers, who lost to Amo Sharks by 26 runs under the DLS method at Kabul International Stadium.
The ongoing Shpageeza Cricket League features around 90 players, including 35 national stars like Azmatullah Omarzai, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Naveen-ul-Haq. The tournament is a showcase of Afghanistan’s cricketing talent and a step towards rebuilding the country’s reputation as a host for international cricket.
ACB Chief Executive Naseeb Khan highlighted the significance of Rashid Khan’s participation in the tournament, linking it to broader improvements in the country’s security situation. “Rashid Khan’s involvement in domestic cricket reflects several positive changes in Afghanistan,” Naseeb told Cricbuzz. “Successfully hosting the List A event in Kunduz and the Shpageeza Cricket League in a peaceful environment also serves as an invitation for other countries’ cricket teams to visit and play in Afghanistan.”
While Rashid Khan’s participation has garnered attention, the future of Afghanistan’s cricket team is also being closely watched, particularly with regards to head coach Jonathon Trott. Trott, who has been instrumental in Afghanistan’s recent performances, has been named the new head coach of Pretoria Capitals in the SA20 league, a position left vacant after Graham Ford’s departure in May 2024. Trott’s contract with the ACB runs until the end of 2024, and there is no immediate clash between his new role and his commitments to Afghanistan. However, his future with the ACB beyond 2024 remains uncertain.
When asked about Trott’s future and his potential involvement with the SA20 league, Naseeb Khan was cautious in his response. “We have a contract with Trott until the end of 2024, and we haven’t considered other options even for the Champions Trophy,” Naseeb said. “ACB and Trott have not yet discussed 2025, and once we do, it would be the perfect time to answer this question.”
As Afghanistan continues to make strides both on and off the cricket field, the hope is that the participation of stars like Rashid Khan in domestic tournaments will pave the way for the return of international cricket to Afghan soil. For now, the ACB remains focused on building a secure and peaceful environment that will allow the nation’s cricketing dreams to flourish.
