Spanish champions Real Madrid claimed a 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid in La Liga on Sunday, marking Kylian Mbappe home debut at the Santiago Bernabéu. Despite the French striker’s much-anticipated first appearance in front of the home crowd, he was unable to find the back of the net. Fede Valverde opened the scoring early in the second half, with substitutes Brahim Díaz and debutant Endrick sealing the win with late goals.
Real Madrid, still adjusting to the absence of injured star Jude Bellingham, struggled to create clear chances in the first half against a well-organized Valladolid defense. However, Carlo Ancelotti’s side came out with renewed energy after the break. Valverde broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with a low free-kick that took a deflection on its way into the net.
Mbappe, who joined Real Madrid in a high-profile transfer this summer, had a couple of opportunities to score his first La Liga goal, but was denied by Valladolid’s Estonian goalkeeper Karl Hein. The France captain, who scored on his debut in the UEFA Super Cup, has now gone two La Liga matches without finding the net. He was eventually replaced by 18-year-old Brazilian forward Endrick, who made an immediate impact by scoring on his debut.
Ancelotti praised Mbappe performance, saying, “He’s a spectacular forward, very fast, moves well without the ball, and attacks in behind. He had three or four chances created with his movement. In this position, he will score like he always scores.”
Brahim Díaz added Madrid’s second goal with a clever lob over the goalkeeper, and Endrick capped off the victory with a drilled finish at the near post, celebrating his first appearance for the club in style. Ancelotti was full of praise for the young Brazilian, stating, “He’s got a lot of potential and for his goal, he showed his quality. He’s a center-forward who plays in the box, in small spaces he’s very dangerous.”
The win moves Real Madrid two points behind arch-rivals Barcelona, who secured a win against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.
Atlético Madrid Cruise to 3-0 Win Over Girona
Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid earned their first win of the season with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Girona at the Metropolitano Stadium. Antoine Griezmann, Marcos Llorente, and Koke were on target as Diego Simeone’s side delivered a commanding performance.
Griezmann opened the scoring shortly before halftime with a low free-kick that caught Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga off guard. Llorente doubled Atlético’s lead early in the second half with a powerful strike from outside the box. Koke sealed the victory in stoppage time, finishing off a counter-attack set up by Llorente.
“The fans were really excited for this one, playing at home for the first time in some time, with new signings—a perfect night,” Griezmann said after the match.
Girona, last season’s surprise package finishing third ahead of Atlético, struggled to make an impact and now have just one point from their opening two matches. Despite the loss, Girona midfielder Oriol Romeu remained optimistic, saying, “It’s a process, the season is long but we want to get to our best version as soon as we can.”
La Liga Standings
With these results, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid both solidify their positions in the early La Liga standings, while Girona will look to bounce back in the coming matches.
