Liverpool has secured the signature of Italy international Federico Chiesa from Juventus, marking their second major signing of the summer transfer window. The deal, reportedly worth €15 million, comes as Chiesa enters the final year of his contract with the Serie A giants. The 26-year-old forward has signed a contract with Liverpool that will keep him at Anfield until 2028.
Chiesa, who had fallen out of favor under Juventus’ new manager Thiago Motta, had been linked to top European clubs such as FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal. However, it was Liverpool who moved swiftly to secure his services, adding another significant piece to their squad under new manager Arne Slot.
Speaking to Liverpool’s official website, Chiesa expressed his excitement about joining the Reds: “I’m so happy to be a Liverpool player. When Richard Hughes called me and he said, ‘Do you want to join Liverpool?’ – and the coach called me – I said yes immediately because I know the history of this club, I know what it represents to the fans. So, I’m so happy, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Chiesa will don the No. 14 jersey at Liverpool, a number he has worn with the Italian national team. Explaining his choice, he said: “It’s the number I’ve been wearing with the national team, but it was an easy pick because Liverpool sent me a video, and at the end of this video – which was showing my career and the goals I scored with Fiorentina and Juventus – it was me with the No.14 shirt on, so I said, ‘Ah, it was destined to be!’”
Chiesa also shared a personal moment from his arrival in Liverpool, revealing how the iconic “You’ll Never Walk Alone” anthem played a role in his excitement. “I just want to say something that stuck to my mind when I was about to land [in] the aeroplane. I saw Anfield, and as soon as I saw Anfield, I said to my wife, ‘Put the song on – You’ll Never Walk Alone – because I want to imagine myself playing there and hearing the chant of the fans.’ It was just a fun bit.”
Reflecting on how it will feel to experience that moment in reality, Chiesa added: “I will have shivers, and it will be so emotional for me and for my family.”
Chiesa’s journey to Liverpool has been marked by both triumph and adversity. He began his career at Fiorentina, where his father, Enrico Chiesa, also played, before moving to Juventus. His time in Turin saw him become a key player, contributing eight goals and four assists in his debut season and playing a crucial role in Italy’s Euro 2021 victory.
However, Chiesa’s career was hampered by a devastating ACL injury that sidelined him for seven months. Despite this setback, he showed signs of returning to form in his final season with Juventus, scoring nine goals and providing four assists in 33 games.
Chiesa’s versatility makes him a valuable addition to Liverpool’s squad. He is capable of playing on both the left and right flanks, as well as in more central attacking roles as a No. 10 or even a striker.
As Liverpool prepares for the new season, fans will be eager to see how Chiesa’s skills and passion will contribute to the club’s pursuit of success on both domestic and European fronts.
