In the vast Narendra Modi Stadium, saturated with a sea of Indian blue from its 132,000-capacity crowd, the only audible cheers reverberated from the triumphant Australian players on the field as Virat Kohli covered his face with his India cap, and Rohit Sharma departed with a lowered head.
On Sunday, Australia secured a historic sixth World Cup title, reaffirming its supremacy in one-day cricket. They brought an end to Indias’ formidable performance in their home tournament, clinching a six-wicket triumph in a low-scoring final, propelled by Travis Head’s outstanding innings of 137.
Australia faced a shaky start in its pursuit of the target at 47-3 after seven overs. However, Head and Labuschagne steadied the innings, contributing to Australia’s collection of 50-over world titles in 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015.
India have won the World Cup in the year 1983 and 2013.
“Today, we fell short,” remarked India skipper Rohit Sharma. “Despite our best efforts, things didn’t go our way. We aimed for 270-280, but the continuous loss of wickets limited us to 240. With that score, you aim to keep taking wickets, and we managed to take three. However, credit goes to Head and Labuschagne for their crucial partnership. We couldn’t create opportunities to turn the game in our favor.”
“What an incredible day, I’m absolutely delighted to be a part of it,” Head expressed. “It’s far more exciting than just sitting on the couch at home.”
Concluding the 2023 tournament, Australia achieved a streak of nine consecutive victories, bouncing back from initial back-to-back losses to India and South Africa.
