In the first T20 between India and Australia, Skipper Suryakumar Yadav led from the front alongside Ishan Kishan, guiding an inexperienced Indian team to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Australia in the opening match of the five-game series.
Chasing a challenging target of 209 runs, Suryakumar Yadav scored 80 off 42 balls, while Kishan contributed 58 off 39 balls, ultimately securing the win for India on the final delivery. Rinku Singh’s unbeaten 22 off 14 balls added the finishing touch with a six.
India-origin leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha (2/47) took two wickets for Australia.
Earlier, Australia posted a formidable total of 208 for three after Indian skipper Suryakumar Yadav chose to bowl. Josh Inglis played a spectacular innings, smashing his maiden T20 century with 110 runs off 50 balls, featuring 11 boundaries and eight sixes.
Indian bowler Ravi Bishnoi dismissed Matthew Short in the fifth over. Steven Smith and Josh Inglis then built a partnership, with Inglis reaching his century in just 47 balls. However, he was eventually dismissed by Y Jaiswal and Mukesh Kumar. Steven Smith completed a half-century but was run out in the 16th over.
Australia set a target of 209 runs for India, who successfully chased it down in a nail-biting finish.
The Indian squad for the T20 series against Australia consists mainly of relatively new players in international cricket, many of whom were part of the Asian Games gold medal-winning team. Notably, spinner Axar Patel, previously ruled out of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 due to injury, has returned, while wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson is among the notable omissions.
In contrast, the Australian team retained much of the same lineup that secured the ICC World Cup trophy in Ahmedabad, opting to rest key players such as Pat Cummins and David Warner. Left-handed batter Travis Head, the Man of the Match in the final, will be in the spotlight after leading Australia to their 6th World Cup title with a century.
