In a setback for Pakistan’s cricket team, legspinner Abrar Ahmed has been ruled out of the opening Test against Australia due to a knee injury, casting doubt on his participation in the remaining two Tests of the series. While the extent of his injury leaves his availability for the second and third Tests uncertain, Pakistan has swiftly brought in Sajid Khan as a backup option for the squad.
Abrar suffered an injury to his right knee during Pakistan’s match against the Australia Prime Minister XI. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed that Abrar will undergo treatment in Perth and his fitness will be reassessed before the crucial Boxing Day Test.
The PCB release stated, “During an assessment by the medical team, a provisional diagnosis was made – justifying an MRI scan, which was done on the same day. Abrar will undergo an intervention in Perth on Monday, after which conservative rehabilitation under the supervision of the team’s medical staff, will continue his road to recovery.”
While Abrar has not been ruled out of the Test series yet, the PCB emphasized that further assessment before the second Test will determine his availability for the rest of the tour. The decision is not only based on the immediate series but also considers the player’s well-being for future tours.
Pakistan’s first Test against Australia in Perth is scheduled to commence on December 14. The second Test will follow on December 26 at the MCG, and the final Test is set to be played at the SCG from January 3. The absence of Abrar Ahmed poses a challenge for Pakistan, and the inclusion of Sajid Khan as a backup underscores the team’s proactive approach to address the unexpected setback. The cricketing community awaits updates on Abrar’s condition as the series approaches.
