Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, known for advocating the non-striker run-out, found himself at the center of controversy during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match. While playing for the Dindigul Dragons against the Nellai Royal Kings, Ashwin received a warning for backing up too far. In the 15th over, left-arm spinner Mohan Prasath paused his delivery after noticing Ashwin had left the crease prematurely, with replays showing Ashwin’s bat slipping out of the popping crease.
The incident sparked lively discussions on social media. While some mocked Ashwin for experiencing the rule he often supports, others defended him, noting that he didn’t gain an unfair advantage. Ashwin later shared a screenshot of the relevant law, explaining he would not have been out even if the bails had been dislodged. Law 38.3 states, “a non-striker is liable to be run out from the moment the ball comes into play until the bowler is expected to release the ball.”
Ashwin, currently not part of India’s white-ball squad touring Sri Lanka, is expected to return for the Test series against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, India secured a seven-wicket win in a rain-affected second T20I against Sri Lanka, clinching the series 2-0. The final T20I will take place on Tuesday in Pallekele, followed by a three-match ODI series. Captain Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Kuldeep Yadav, and Harshit Rana, have reportedly arrived in Colombo for the ODIs.
