Pakistan skipper Babar Azam breathed a sigh of relief after logging their first win in the T20 World Cup on Tuesday. Following back-to-back losses to the USA and India, Pakistan faced a must-win game against Canada. Chasing a modest target of 107, Pakistan triumphed in 17.3 overs, thanks to Mohammad Rizwan’s unbeaten 53 and Babar’s steady 33.
“Good for us, we needed this win. We started well with the bowling; in the first six overs, we knew we had to be up to the mark,” Babar said during the post-match presentation.
Despite the victory, Babar Azam acknowledged the difficulties posed by the pitch, which prevented them from achieving the win within 14 overs to boost their net run rate. “It was in our mind to get over USA’s net run rate, to win before 14 overs, but the pitch made it difficult,” he explained.
Babar’s frustration was evident after being dismissed for 33, caught in the slips while attempting a shot down to third man. “I got out with the same shot twice (against India)! This is my shot, but sometimes you need success. I’ll try my best.”
With this win, Pakistan climbed to third place in Group A, with two points from three games, sitting ahead of Canada and Ireland. India leads the group with two wins, followed by the USA, which also has two victories.
Canada’s captain, Saad Bin Zafar, acknowledged the challenging conditions. “Definitely, it was a bit disappointing. We wanted to play a positive brand of cricket, but the wicket was not very helpful. It was difficult to bat early on – not a good toss to lose. We were about 25 to 30 runs short,” Zafar commented.
As Pakistan eyes the remaining matches, the team will focus on building momentum from this crucial win. With India and the USA leading the group, Pakistan must capitalize on this victory and improve their net run rate to enhance their chances of advancing.
The team’s next matches will be critical in determining their fate in the T20 World Cup, as they strive to overcome early setbacks and showcase their prowess on the world stage.
