Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali has taken a swipe at the International Cricket Council (ICC) after Babar Azam retained his position as the top-ranked ODI batter, despite not playing a One Day International since November 2023. Basit questioned the credibility of the ICC’s ranking system, suggesting that it might be designed to hinder Babar’s performance by keeping him content with his top ranking.
Babar Azam remains at the top, followed by Indian stars Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. Basit expressed his confusion and skepticism about the rankings, pointing out the absence of players like Australia’s Travis Head and New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra, who had outstanding performances during the recent ICC Cricket World Cup.
“When I saw the ICC ranking, Babar Azam was at the top, followed by Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli. But I didn’t see Travis Head or Rachin Ravindra. I think the ICC wants Babar to stay at the top so that he doesn’t feel the need to perform. Who decides these rankings?” Basit said on his YouTube channel.
He also highlighted that Babar’s last ODI appearance was during the 2023 World Cup and questioned why players like Rachin Ravindra, Quinton de Kock, and Travis Head, who scored multiple centuries during the tournament, were not ranked higher. Basit also pointed out that Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan and Fakhar Zaman scored centuries, yet did not see similar recognition.
Meanwhile, India’s captain Rohit Sharma saw a significant jump in the rankings, climbing to the second spot after his stellar performance in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Rohit ended the series as the top scorer, with 157 runs at an average of 52.33 and an impressive strike rate of 141.44, including two half-centuries.
The debate over the ICC’s ranking system continues, with Basit Ali’s comments fueling discussions on the fairness and transparency of the criteria used to evaluate and rank the world’s top cricketing talent.
