The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a strict mandate requiring all centrally contracted players who are fit and not on national duty to participate in domestic cricket. This move comes after Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan were left out of the central contract list earlier this year for skipping domestic matches despite being fit and available.
Both Iyer and Kishan will now participate in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, set to commence on September 5. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah revealed that the players’ inclusion in the domestic tournament is a direct result of the BCCI’s firm stance on the matter.
“If you look at the Duleep Trophy squad, apart from Rohit and Virat, the rest are going to play. It’s because of the harsh steps I have taken that Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan are playing the Duleep Trophy,” Jay Shah told the ‘Times of India’. He emphasized the board’s commitment to ensuring that injured players must prove their fitness through domestic cricket before rejoining the national team. “We have been a little strict. When Ravindra Jadeja was injured, I was the one who called him and asked him to play a domestic game. It’s certain now—whoever gets injured and goes out can only come into the Indian team after proving his fitness in domestic cricket.”
However, top players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Jasprit Bumrah have been given the green light to rest as part of workload management, particularly with a busy international schedule ahead. India’s next fixture is a two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting September 19.
“It doesn’t make sense to add to Virat and Rohit’s load by asking them to play domestic cricket. They run the risk of getting injured,” Shah explained. “You also need to look at England and Australia. None of their top players play domestic cricket. We must treat our players respectfully and not treat them like servants.”
This new policy underscores the BCCI’s focus on maintaining a balance between respecting players’ workload and ensuring their commitment to domestic cricket, which remains a vital part of the Indian cricket ecosystem.
