In a powerful message to aspiring players eyeing a spot in the Indian cricket team, Captain Rohit Sharma emphasized the significance of dedication and hard work, stating that opportunities will only be extended to individuals who exhibit a “hunger for success” in the challenging format of Test cricket.

India’s recent victory against England in the fourth Test not only secured their 17th consecutive Test series win at home but also showcased the pivotal contributions of new talents like Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Akash Deep. Rohit expressed satisfaction with their performances and outlined specific qualities of hunger and talent that he seeks in the team.

“Jin logon ko bhookh hai, hum unhi logon ko mauka denge (We will give opportunities to only those who are hungry),” Rohit declared, making it clear that the team management is focused on nurturing players with a burning desire to perform at the highest level.

The captain’s remarks come in the wake of a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), urging players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer to participate in Ranji Trophy matches. “I don’t see anyone in the team here who is not hungry. All the boys who are here and also those who are not, they all want to play. But the thing with Test cricket is that you get very few opportunities. If you don’t utilise them, they go away,” Rohit emphasized.

Addressing the influence of the upcoming IPL on young players’ priorities, Rohit stressed, “Test cricket is the toughest format. If you want to excel and achieve success in this format, you have to show the hunger.”

Rohit, without naming anyone, pointed out the stringent selection criteria set by the team management, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and nurturing players who are committed and hungry for success.

Commending the exceptional performances of young players, Rohit singled out Yashasvi Jaiswal for his impressive achievements, including two double centuries. He also acknowledged the crucial contributions of wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel, whose efforts played a pivotal role in India’s victory in the recent match.

“These guys have come with an open mind and are ready to put their hands up and do it. That is the kind of guys we need in our squad. Basically putting the team before the individual,” Rohit stated, highlighting the team-first approach that is crucial for success in Test cricket.
