Batting coach Michael Hussey provided insights into Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) revamped approach as they kicked off the 2024 season with a dominant display against Gujarat Titans. After a commanding victory, Hussey shed light on CSK’s proactive mindset, emphasizing their commitment to aggressive cricket under coach Stephen Fleming’s guidance.
“The directive from Fleming is clear: keep pushing the game forward,” remarked Hussey following CSK’s imposing total of 206/6 in the victory over Gujarat Titans at their home ground.
The shift in Chennai’s batting strategy came in response to a lackluster performance in the 2022 season and the introduction of the impact player rule, which provided teams with additional resources.
“With MSD batting at #8, it’s unprecedented. He’s in fine form, which adds another dimension to our lineup,” Hussey explained, highlighting the depth CSK possesses.
CSK’s revamped approach yielded immediate results last season, with Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad setting the tempo early on. Hussey outlined the team’s emphasis on playing high-risk cricket throughout the innings, backed by the coaching staff and captain.
“We encourage our players to adopt a positive approach, even if it means taking risks. Fleming’s philosophy revolves around playing fast,” Hussey emphasized.
Rachin Ravindra, CSK’s recent acquisition, has seamlessly embraced the team’s aggressive ethos. Making an impact with his fearless stroke play, Ravindra showcased his talent against formidable bowling attacks, earning praise from Hussey.

“As he gained momentum, his belief in his abilities grew. He approaches each game with a clear mindset and a positive attitude,” Hussey added, highlighting Ravindra’s growth and determination.
