In a recent interview, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO Kasi Viswanathan offered insights into ongoing discussions about a succession plan within the franchise, especially concerning the captaincy post MS Dhoni’s tenure.
Viswanathan confirmed that MS Dhoni will continue to lead CSK in IPL 2024. However, he shed light on owner N Srinivasan’s perspective, emphasizing the autonomy given to the captain and coach in decision-making regarding leadership appointments.
“In internal discussions, Srinivasan has made it very clear. Let’s not talk about captain and vice-captain appointments. Let’s leave it to the coach and the captain to decide,” stated Viswanathan during an interview with S Badrinath on a YouTube show.
He highlighted Srinivasan’s directive, stating, “He has said that ‘the captain and the coach will decide and give us a directive, till then let’s all keep quiet.'”
Despite ongoing talks about Dhoni’s future, the former Indian captain has quashed retirement rumors and committed to leading CSK for at least another season as a gesture of gratitude to the fans. Dhoni, who has recovered from a knee injury, actively participates in leading CSK’s training sessions ahead of the new IPL season.
Viswanathan acknowledged that internal discussions about leadership succession are underway. However, he reiterated Srinivasan’s directive to let the captain and coach determine the course of action regarding captaincy appointments. He recalled that CSK had previously entrusted Ravindra Jadeja with the captaincy at the start of IPL 2022, only for Dhoni to reclaim the role after a series of poor results.
Looking ahead to IPL 2024, Viswanathan emphasized the franchise’s focus on qualifying for the knockouts, highlighting Dhoni’s approach to concentrate on league games first. As CSK prepares for the upcoming season, the evolving leadership dynamics within the team, guided by Dhoni’s experience, will be closely observed.
