Defending champions MI New York started their MLC 2024 campaign with a commanding six-wicket victory over the Seattle Orcas in Morrisville. Winning the toss on a tricky pitch, MI New York’s star bowlers, Rashid Khan and Trent Boult, shone brightly, each taking three wickets to bowl out the Orcas for a modest 108. Nicholas Pooran then led the chase with a blistering 37-ball 62*, guiding his team to victory in just 14.2 overs.
Boult set the tone early, removing Nauman Anwar in the first over with a delivery that angled across, resulting in a nick to the wicketkeeper, Pooran. Boult struck again in his next over, dismissing the dangerous Quinton de Kock, whose attempted whip off a full delivery ballooned into Pooran’s gloves.
Rashid Khan, introduced in the final over of the PowerPlay, struck immediately with a full delivery that trapped Aaron Jones LBW. Rashid’s bigger scalp came when he dismissed Heinrich Klaasen, who miscued a pull shot to deep mid-wicket. Shubham Ranjane was the lone fighter for the Orcas, scoring a 31-ball 35 before becoming Rashid’s third victim. Boult also claimed a third wicket, and captain Kieron Pollard chipped in with two more as the Orcas were bowled out with four balls to spare.
MINY’s chase began shakily, with openers Ruben Clinton and Monank Patel falling cheaply to Cameron Gannon. However, Pooran took charge, counter-attacking to build a crucial 41-run partnership for the third wicket with Shayan Jahangir, who contributed just 3 off 8 balls. Pooran’s innings, featuring seven fours and two sixes, ensured that MI New York crossed the finish line with 34 balls remaining.
