New Zealand cricketers Devon Conway and Finn Allen are the latest to turn down central contracts, reflecting the increasing pull of global franchise leagues. While Devon Conway has signed a casual agreement with New Zealand Cricket (NZC) and will remain available for most international matches, Allen has opted to explore franchise opportunities without a similar agreement, although he remains eligible for selection on a case-by-case basis.
Conway, who moved from South Africa to New Zealand in 2017, will represent the Joburg Super Kings in SA20 in January, marking his first return to South Africa as a player. Despite this, he has committed to New Zealand’s upcoming Test matches and warm-ups for the Champions Trophy in February.
“Playing for the Blackcaps is still the pinnacle for me,” Conway stated, emphasizing his commitment to international cricket despite stepping away from a central contract. NZC chief executive Scott Weenink highlighted the importance of flexibility in retaining top players amid the growing influence of franchise cricket.
Allen, known for his explosive batting, is expected to sign with the Big Bash League (BBL), joining other top New Zealand players like Kane Williamson and Trent Boult in prioritizing franchise commitments over central contracts.
This shift underscores the changing landscape of international cricket, where players are increasingly balancing national duties with lucrative franchise opportunities.
