FIFA has expressed its willingness to engage in discussions with football governing bodies that have threatened legal action over what they describe as FIFA’s “abuse of dominance” in managing the sport’s calendar. The call for talks comes after the European Leagues, representing 39 leagues in 33 countries, and the global players’ union FIFPro announced potential legal proceedings last week.
At the heart of the dispute is FIFA’s plan to introduce a 32-team Club World Cup at the end of the next season. In May, the World Leagues Association, which includes 46 leagues such as the Premier League, signaled that it might pursue legal action if FIFA proceeds with its ambitious expansion plans. The associations argue that the addition of more games to the already crowded football calendar poses risks to player welfare and disrupts domestic competitions.
A FIFA spokesperson responded to these concerns, emphasizing the organization’s openness to dialogue. “FIFA has reiterated an invitation to meet and discuss the calendar with the World Leagues Association and FIFPro, having received no response to a letter on 10 May 2024,” the spokesperson stated. “FIFA believes there is a more productive way forward for football than the threat of legal action, and the offer to engage in dialogue remains on the table.”
The spokesperson further highlighted FIFA’s role in balancing the interests of global football, including player protection. “FIFA serves and balances the overall interests of world football, including the protection of players, and always strives to do what is best for the game around the world,” they added.
This call for conversation comes amidst growing concerns about the physical and mental toll on players due to the increasing number of fixtures. The proposed 32-team Club World Cup is seen by critics as exacerbating this issue, with more games meaning more travel and less recovery time for players.
As tensions rise, the football community watches closely to see whether FIFA and the concerned associations can find a common ground that respects both the growth of global football and the well-being of its players.
