Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his decision to take an indefinite break from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 campaign. The revelation came during a press conference following RCB’s defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday night.
Glenn Maxwell, who has faced significant criticism due to his poor form with the bat, was notably absent from the XI against SRH, with Will Jacks taking his place. Addressing the media, Maxwell cited his current mental and physical state as the primary reasons behind his decision to step away from the tournament.
“I’m not in a good mental and physical space at the moment,” stated Maxwell. “After the last game, I approached Faf [du Plessis] and the coaches and expressed my belief that it was time to give someone else an opportunity. I’ve been in situations like this before, where continuing to play only deepens the rut. Taking a break now allows me to focus on rejuvenating both mentally and physically.”
Maxwell emphasized the need to prioritize his well-being, acknowledging his recent struggles to contribute positively to the team’s performance. “I haven’t been able to deliver in my usual areas of strength, especially after the powerplay,” he explained. “Given our current position on the table and my own form, I believe it’s best to step back and allow someone else to showcase their skills.”
This isn’t the first time Maxwell has taken time off from the game to address mental fatigue. Recognizing the challenges of T20 cricket, he expressed his determination to bounce back stronger once he feels ready to return to action.
Former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar had previously criticized Maxwell’s performance in the IPL, particularly against fast bowling. Maxwell acknowledged the validity of these concerns, admitting to facing difficulties against deliveries aimed at his chest or shoulder height.
As Maxwell takes a hiatus from the IPL, RCB and cricket fans alike will await his eventual return, hoping to witness the resurgence of the dynamic all-rounder who has previously showcased his match-winning abilities on numerous occasions.
