Manchester City forward Jack Grealish has opened up about the heartbreak of being left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad, describing it as the “most difficult thing” he’s faced in his career. Despite being a key player for his club and country, the 28-year-old was omitted from Gareth Southgate’s final 26-man squad, a decision that has left him deeply disappointed.
Grealish featured as a substitute in England’s 3-0 warm-up victory against Bosnia-Herzegovina at St James’ Park just days before the tournament. However, he was left out of the final squad that ultimately reached the final, losing 2-1 to Spain. Reflecting on the experience, the former Aston Villa star, who has earned 36 caps for England, expressed his pain.
“Football-wise, it was the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to deal with,” Grealish said during Manchester City’s pre-season tour in the United States. “I was absolutely heartbroken. For me, moving forward, I have to use that as motivation for this season.”
Grealish’s exclusion was particularly surprising given his £100m transfer to City in August 2021, a British record, just a month after playing in the Euro 2020 final against Italy. The winger believes he could have brought a unique element to the England squad.
“I felt I should have been in the squad. I feel like I offer something different to the players in the England team,” Grealish added. “But it is what it is. It was the hardest moment for me as a footballer. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my career.”
As Grealish looks ahead to the new season, he’s determined to channel his disappointment into positive performances, both for Manchester City and in future England call-ups.
