Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has been elected as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), succeeding Greg Barclay. Shah, who will assume his new role on December 1, was elected unopposed, making history as the youngest head of the ICC at the age of 36.
Shah’s election marks the beginning of a significant new chapter in cricket’s global leadership. His term will last three years, with an option to extend for an additional three years. As he prepares to take on his new role, Shah will step down from his position at the BCCI, a post he has held since 2019.
The ICC confirmed that Jay Shah was the sole nominee for the position, with multiple sets of nominations filed on his behalf by the existing 16 directors of the organization. Under ICC rules, the candidate does not need to file nomination papers personally, a process that worked in Shah’s favor as he garnered unanimous support.
One of Shah’s immediate tasks as ICC Chairman will be to appoint a new Independent Woman Director, following the conclusion of Indra Nooyi’s tenure last month. Additionally, he faces the challenge of addressing Disney Star’s request for renegotiation of the $3 billion broadcast deal, a critical issue in global cricket’s financial landscape.
Another significant responsibility will be ensuring a smooth transition of power within the BCCI by identifying a suitable successor for his former role as secretary.
Jay Shah expressed his vision for the future of cricket, emphasizing the importance of expanding the sport’s global reach, particularly with cricket’s upcoming inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“I am humbled by the nomination as the Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah stated. “I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our member nations to further globalize cricket. We stand at a critical juncture where it is increasingly important to balance the coexistence of multiple formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies, and introduce our marquee events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”
He added, “While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace fresh thinking and innovation to elevate the love for cricket worldwide. The inclusion of our sport in the Olympics at LA 2028 represents a significant inflection point for the growth of cricket, and I am confident that it will drive the sport forward in unprecedented ways.”
The ICC welcomed Shah’s election, noting that his leadership heralds a new era for the organization as it seeks to expand the game’s reach and continue its evolution on the global stage. As Shah takes the helm, the cricketing world watches with anticipation to see how he will steer the sport into this promising new phase.
