New Zealand’s cricket captain, Kane Williamson, faces another setback as a hamstring injury forces him out of the ongoing T20I series against Pakistan. The 33-year-old sustained the injury during the second T20I in Hamilton, where he retired hurt while batting. Scans subsequently revealed a minor strain.
This injury comes on the heels of a challenging period for Williamson, as the strained hamstrings affect the same right leg that suffered a significant injury during the opening game of IPL 2023. Last year, he endured ruptured anterior cruciate ligaments, requiring surgical intervention and a prolonged recovery period. Despite returning for the ODI World Cup, another setback occurred when he suffered a fractured finger in a match against Bangladesh.
New Zealand Cricket is currently working on establishing a rehabilitation timeline for Williamson, aiming for his readiness for selection in the Test series against South Africa next month.
With Williamson’s absence, batter Will Young will extend his stay with the squad for the remaining three games of the Pakistan series. Originally planned to rest for the third T20I, Williamson’s spot in the XI will be filled by Tim Seifert, who will also take over wicketkeeping duties from Devon Conway.
Coach Gary Stead acknowledged the void left by Williamson’s absence, emphasizing the captain’s stabilizing influence on the batting lineup. Seifert, set to step in, has an opportunity to showcase his skills and fill the crucial role that Kane’s absence creates for the remainder of the series.
