Chelsea winger Noni Madueke has reassured fans that “everything is going to be fine” when Enzo Fernandez returns to the squad, despite the ongoing disciplinary proceedings concerning alleged racism.
Midfielder Enzo Fernandez is set to rejoin the team on Monday, July 29, after being accused of involvement in “uninhibited racism” by his teammate Wesley Fofana. The controversy erupted following the French Football Federation’s shock at footage of what it described as a “racist and discriminatory” song sung by players after Argentina’s Copa America victory. The song questioned the heritage of France’s black and mixed-race players.
Enzo Fernandez has since issued personal apologies to his Chelsea teammates, six of whom are Frenchmen of African descent, as well as a public apology. The club has initiated an internal disciplinary procedure, and FIFA has also launched an investigation into the matter.
Madueke, who started in Chelsea’s first pre-season friendly under new manager Enzo Maresca, a 2-2 draw against Wrexham, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to handle the situation internally. “That’s something that’s between us players,” the 22-year-old stated. “Enzo is going to come back and join his team again and everything is going to be fine.”
Chelsea’s manager, Enzo Maresca, echoed Madueke’s sentiments earlier during the pre-season tour, emphasizing that the situation had been “already clear and clarified” and assured there would not be “any problems at all.”
Club captain Reece James has also indicated his readiness to mediate if necessary as Chelsea continues their pre-season tour in the United States, with matches against Celtic, Club America, Manchester City, and Real Madrid on the horizon.
Madueke, typically a right-winger, highlighted the team’s focus on adapting to Maresca’s style of play, a shift from the approach of former manager Mauricio Pochettino. “You’ve got to stay high and wide and be very patient at times [as a winger],” he explained. “A lot of the time you might not get touches in lower areas of the pitch, but it’s about staying high and waiting for that killer pass when you can go and do real damage. It’s about being patient and waiting for the opportunity to run and do my stuff.”
As Chelsea navigates through this period of internal challenges and adjustments, the club’s focus remains on unity and adaptation, both on and off the pitch. The players’ collective resolve and the leadership of figures like Maresca and James will be crucial in maintaining team harmony and performance as they gear up for the new season.
