Indian spin veteran Ravichandran Ashwin recently shared a heartfelt moment from the ICC T20 World Cup, where former head coach Rahul Dravid emotionally embraced the trophy after leading India to victory. Dravid, who ended his coaching stint on a high note by securing India’s first major ICC trophy in 11 years, was seen hugging the cup and crying after the team’s seven-run win over South Africa in the final on June 29.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin reflected on the significance of the moment. “My moment was when Virat Kohli called Rahul Dravid and gave him the cup… I saw him hug the cup and cry. Rahul Dravid screamed and cried. I saw him enjoy it. I felt that a lot,” Ashwin revealed, highlighting the emotional depth of Dravid’s victory.
Dravid, a legendary cricketer who never won a major ICC World Cup as a player or captain, found redemption in his final international assignment as a coach. His tenure saw significant highs and lows, including criticism and setbacks such as the 2007 50-over World Cup first-round exit. Despite these challenges, Dravid’s dedication and strategic planning paid off, culminating in this historic win.
Ashwin paid tribute to Dravid’s resilience and the transformative impact he had on the team over the past few years. “I want to talk about a person who is sacred. 2007, 50-over World Cup. India gets knocked out. Rahul Dravid, the captain at that point in time. He does not captain the one-day side after that. He has been with the Indian team. If something does not go well, if the Indian team goes out, if they lose a match, immediately, they ask what Dravid is doing,” Ashwin said.
“I know what he has been doing with this team for the past two-three years. I know how balanced he has been. I know how hard he has worked to change this approach. I know what he has given each of his players. Even when he is just sitting at home, he has been planning how to do this and that,” Ashwin added, acknowledging Dravid’s relentless commitment.
As Dravid steps down, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has been announced as his successor. Gambhir is set to begin his coaching era with the white-ball tour to Sri Lanka starting on July 27, marking a new chapter in Indian cricket.
This victory not only highlights Dravid’s successful tenure but also sets a hopeful tone for the future under Gambhir’s guidance.
