Ukrainian midfielder Mykhailo Mudryk will step onto the field at Euro 2024 with the weight of a personal battle far from the pitch. As his home city of Krasnograd faces relentless Russian missile attacks, Mudryk’s participation in the tournament is deeply tinged with the ongoing conflict in his homeland.
Since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the lives of millions of Ukrainians, including Mudryk’s family, have been upended. In a heartfelt video produced by Ukraine’s football association, Mudryk is one of 13 players who candidly discussed the impact of the war on their hometowns.
“Since the beginning of the full-scale war, my city has been bombarded with missiles day and night,” said Mudryk, a key player for the Ukrainian national team and Chelsea. Despite the constant threat, his parents have chosen to stay in Krasnograd, continuing their lives amidst the chaos. “They always believe in the victory of Ukraine,” he added, highlighting their unwavering spirit.
Krasnograd, located in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine, has been a significant target during the conflict. The region saw a partial recapture by Ukrainian troops in 2022, but the area remains under severe threat, with renewed Russian offensives as recently as May.
Mudryk is not alone in his experiences. Fellow footballers Oleksandr Zinchenko of Arsenal and Ilya Zabarnyi of Bournemouth also shared their stories in the video. Dynamo Kyiv striker Mykola Shaparenko spoke poignantly about his childhood village of Velyka Novosilka, saying it “was completely destroyed by Russia.”
Ukraine’s national team will kick off their European Championship campaign against Romania on Monday. As they prepare, they do so with a unique perspective on the importance of freedom and resilience. Andriy Shevchenko, former Chelsea striker and now president of Ukraine’s football association (UAF), emphasized this sentiment. “Our cities desire to host the Euros, but now they are fighting not for the tournament, but for freedom,” he said.
The UAF has called on all participating countries at Euro 2024 to support Ukraine, underscoring that “football, like all sports, is not beyond politics.” As Mudryk and his teammates take to the pitch, they carry the hopes of a nation striving for peace and victory both on and off the field.
