Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga is bracing to sit out at least the first three IPL matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) after being included in the national squad for a two-Test series against Bangladesh commencing on March 22.
Hasaranga’s selection for the Test series comes despite his retirement from the longer format last August, as he opted to focus on white-ball cricket. Nonetheless, the 26-year-old finds himself back in the Test fold alongside uncapped spinner Nishan Peiris in Sri Lanka’s 17-man squad announced on Tuesday.
The initial Test is scheduled to take place in Sylhet from March 22 to 26, followed by the second encounter slated from March 30 to April 3 at Chattogram.
Hasaranga’s absence from the IPL will undoubtedly impact Sunrisers Hyderabad, who acquired him at his base price of ₹1.5 crore. With the IPL’s first two-week schedule unveiled, SRH is set to clash with Kolkata Knight Riders on March 23 in Kolkata, followed by matches against Mumbai Indians in Hyderabad on March 27 and Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 31.
Given the timing of the Test series, it remains uncertain whether the right-arm spinner will be available for SRH’s home fixture against Chennai Super Kings on April 5.
Hasaranga’s dual commitment highlights the challenging juggling act faced by players balancing international duties with franchise cricket, underscoring the unpredictable nature of professional cricket schedules.
While Hasaranga’s focus will be on representing Sri Lanka in the upcoming Test series, his stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad awaits his return, adding an element of anticipation for both the player and his IPL franchise.
As cricket fans await the unfolding of events, Hasaranga’s absence from the IPL’s initial matches serves as a reminder of the sport’s global appeal and the diverse opportunities it presents for players to showcase their talent on multiple platforms.
