In a significant shift for Indian cricket, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from T20 Internationals immediately after India clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Adding to this major development, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also retired from T20Is a day later, signaling a new era and paving the way for younger talents to make their mark.
Despite their departure from the shortest format, Kohli, Sharma, and Jadeja remain committed to playing ODIs and Test matches for India. BCCI Secretary Jay Shah acknowledged this transition phase and hinted at the continued involvement of these cricketing legends in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.
“The transition has already happened with three greats retiring,” Shah told reporters, referring to Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. “The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there.”
As Indian cricket moves forward, Hardik Pandya emerges as the leading candidate to take over the T20I captaincy. With experience leading the Gujarat Titans to an IPL title, Pandya captained the Indian T20I side in 2023, demonstrating his leadership abilities and resilience.
“Captaincy will be decided by the selectors and we will announce it after discussing with them,” Shah said. “You asked about Hardik; there were a lot of questions over his form, but the selectors showed faith in him, and he proved himself.”
To celebrate the monumental victory, the BCCI announced a generous prize of ₹125 crore for the Indian cricket team. This victory not only ended an 11-year ICC trophy drought but also marked India’s first T20 World Cup title in 17 years. The team’s victory over South Africa in the final was a fitting farewell for the retiring stalwarts and a hopeful beginning for the next generation of Indian cricketers.
As the Indian cricket fraternity looks forward to the future with optimism, the contributions of Kohli, Sharma, and Jadeja will always be cherished. Their experience and skill will continue to guide the team, especially in the upcoming major tournaments, while the new talents rise to the challenge and uphold India’s cricketing legacy.
