Newly-appointed Lucknow Super Giants mentor Zaheer Khan has thrown his full support behind the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) controversial Impact Player rule, a topic that has sparked intense debate among players, franchise owners, and cricket enthusiasts alike. The rule, introduced in the 2023 season, allows teams to substitute a player—whether a batter or bowler—during their innings, depending on the match’s demands.
Zaheer Khan, a former Indian pacer and Mumbai Indians’ director of cricket, made it clear that he believes the rule adds significant value to the game by enhancing strategic play. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata after his unveiling as the Super Giants’ mentor, Zaheer said, “There has been a debate around the Impact Player rule. I’m going on record to say that I’m all for it.”
The Impact Player rule has polarized opinions within the cricketing community. Senior Indian players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been vocal critics, arguing that it hinders the development of Indian all-rounders and disrupts the balance between bat and ball. On the other hand, players like Ravichandran Ashwin see it as a positive innovation that makes the game fairer.
“Why I think the Impact Player rule is not so bad is because it gives a little more value for strategy,” Ashwin said in a recent interview on former India captain Krishnamachari Srikkanth’s YouTube show. “The other side of that argument is it doesn’t encourage all-rounders. But no one is stopping them. In this generation, they don’t do it [batters bowling and vice-versa]. It’s not like they’re discouraged because of the Impact Player rule.”
Zaheer echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the opportunities the rule creates for uncapped Indian players. “It has definitely given opportunities to a lot of uncapped Indian talents,” he noted. “You will see this in the mega auction when teams will be looking at them. That opportunity goes a long way in improving Indian cricket as a whole. The time spent in match time, it’s something you cannot beat. That’s the biggest plus.”
While acknowledging the concerns about the rule’s impact on all-rounders, Zaheer was optimistic about its long-term benefits. “As far as all-rounders are concerned, right now there is no space for a half all-rounder because of the Impact Player rule. But if you are a genuine all-rounder, no one can stop you. There is always going to be a value addition with the ability with bat and ball,” he added.
Despite the divided opinions, the Impact Player rule remains a hot topic within the IPL. During a meeting between IPL team owners and BCCI officials in July, there was no consensus on whether to continue with the rule. However, with influential voices like Zaheer Khan backing it, the debate is far from over.
As the cricketing world watches how this rule shapes the future of the IPL and Indian cricket, one thing is certain: the Impact Player rule has already made its mark, and its legacy will continue to unfold in the seasons to come.
